SC judgment on Chandigarh mayoral polls a ‘strong message to growing dictatorship’: Delhi CM | Delhi News

The Supreme Court’s verdict on the Chandigarh mayoral election was a strong message to the “growing dictatorship” in the country, said Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal during the Delhi Assembly session Wednesday.

Terming Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud’s judgment a “clear message” from God, the AAP convenor said it underlined that the BJP was not impervious to defeat. “God has given a clear message that if the BJP can lose the Chandigarh mayor elections, it can also lose the general elections. The BJP does not win elections, it rigs them,” he alleged.

Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly Ramvir Singh Bidhuri argued that the matter could not be discussed in the Assembly as per rules, and walked out.
Kejriwal used historical and mythological anecdotes to describe the recent turn of events in the Chandigarh election. “It was Lord Krishna”, he said, “who didn’t let the cameras turn off to bring out the real face of BJP in front of everyone”.

“Just like Draupadi, Lord Shri Krishna protected the democracy of the country. It was a different atmosphere in the Supreme Court yesterday, it felt like Lord Shri Krishna was right there, speaking through the medium of Honourable Chief Justice of India,” he added.

Quoting a verse from the Bhagavad Gita on righteousness (Yada Yada Hi Dharmasya… tadatmanam srijamyham), Kejriwal said: “…Lord Shri Krishna is trying to say through the entire creation through Arjun that whenever righteousness will be crushed on Earth and whenever unrighteousness will become too much, I will be born, I will incarnate.”

Festive offer

What was happening in the country today, Kejriwal alleged, had shaken people’s faith in righteousness, honesty, and truth, while so much wrongdoing had become prevalent that MLAs were “being bought openly”. “Our MLAs were offered Rs 25 crore. Governments are being openly toppled by buying off MLAs. In Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Northeast, and Uttarakhand, MLAs were bought openly… People are losing faith in religion, there is so much unrighteousness everywhere,” he said.

Kejriwal also compared the events around the Chandigarh mayoral polls with the recent parliamentary elections in Pakistan. “These people made our country Pakistan. Whatever this country had achieved with great hard work within 75 years… with one stroke these people destroyed everything,” he alleged.

“If EVMs are to be rigged, the ED is to be unleashed, governments are to be toppled… they will do it. Today, they are putting all the opposition leaders in jail one by one…,” he alleged.

Bidhuri, meanwhile, said in a statement, “While we respect the SC’s decision in the mayoral elections, the other aspect of the picture is that AAP does not have a majority in the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation. In the council of 35 members, the AAP has only 10 members, while the BJP has 18.”
