CONGRESS LEADER Rahul Gandhi was granted bail by a special court here on Tuesday in a defamation case filed by a BJP leader over his “objectionable” remarks against Union Home Minister Amit Shah in 2018.

The court had issued summons to Rahul in a case filed by BJP leader Vijay Mishra.

On Tuesday morning, Rahul reached the court premises amid tight security arrangements. He was accompanied by his party workers. “Rahul Gandhi appeared before the court in response to a summons issued by the court in a defamation case. An application seeking bail was moved and subsequently granted by the court. Special Judge (MP/MLA court) Yogesh Kumar Yadav directed to deposit two sureties of Rs 25,000 each and a personal bond of the same amount,” said Kashi Prasad Shukla, who represented Rahul in the Sultanpur court.

After the formalities were completed, Rahul left the premises. He headed straight to Raebareli.

The court has fixed March 2 as the next date for hearing.

Festive offer

Complainant Vijay Mishra’s counsel Santosh Pandey said an application was also filed by Rahul Gandhi’s lawyer in court on Tuesday seeking his (Rahul Gandhi) exemption from personal appearance. “The court did not issue any order on the application,” said Pandey.

Vijay Mishra is a former vice-president of the BJP’s Sultanpur unit.
