Will ensure officers meet citizens during public meeting hours, says New Chandigarh Adviser | Chandigarh News

New Adviser to the UT Administrator Rajeev Verma on Wednesday said that he would ensure officers meet citizens during dedicated public meeting hours.

Verma stressed on the importance of “a corruption-free administration, particularly in departments dealing with the public”. “There is a need to implement an effective anti-briery management system that supports a working culture based on transparency and integrity,” he said interacting with mediapersons.

Verma said he would also bring in technology for the people to seek online appointments with officers concerned in advance and that they do not have to frequent offices for the smallest of works.

“Accessibility of officials will certainly be ensured. There has to be a dedicated time where you meet citizens. At least during the fixed public meeting hours, they should be in their offices irrespective of the fact they hold multiple departments. Certain days can be fixed. I will make sure citizens are heard and they don’t have to struggle to visit the officers,” Verma said.

Verma, a 1992-batch IAS officer of the Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territory (AGMUT) cadre was posted as the Chief Secretary of Puducherry. On February 7, he assumed the charge of the Chandigarh Adviser that had been lying vacant since October 31 after the previous Adviser Dharam Pal superannuated.

Festive offer

When Verma asked Home Secretary Nitin Yadav whether any such directions were issued earlier, Yadav said directions were issued from time to time, but officers were holding multiple charges and had to move from one department to another.

“I have strictly directed the officers to ensure they give dedicated time, two to three days at least, for public meeting,” he said,
In Chandigarh, most of the offices have public meeting hours scheduled between 12 noon to 1 pm, but not every officer adheres to the order in letter and spirit.

Verma said his top priority would be dealing with the parking chaos and overgrowing traffic in the city that led to heavy congestion.
“I was surprised to see pictures of parking chaos in neighbourhood streets as it can become difficult for any heavy emergency vehicle to enter the area. Solving this issue will certainly be the top priority. I am here for the citizens and will ensure they don’t have to struggle,” Verma said.

The new Adviser said that he would be taking the city to the “next level”

During back-to-back presentations and meetings with each department, Verma set goals for officers. He said the officers were doing good work, but he wanted things to be further streamlined.
